 To mosaic colormapped images with different colormaps, you need to first
 convert the images to 24bit RGB format (with pct2rgb.py).

 So, in the gdal tools merge tool would be nice to

 add and advice

 or

 add a test to see if the problem occurs and then throw a warning

 Note that a similar problem occurs also with gdalbuildvrt: the resulting
 colormap is the one of the first input raster. The result is a raster with
 a wrong colormap in at least 50% of its extensions.
