[Qgis-us-user] joining multiple excel files to shape file layers

Hi. I just started playing with QGIS earlier this year.
I've managed to map a congressional district and the voting precincts.
I then joined and excel file with voting data from the last election and
added
a color ramp to color-code the precincts as to how they voted.
Pretty excited I was able to do that.

Now the question: I was thinking I could link/color-code multiple data,
such as previous election, maybe ethnicity, voter turnout, ..... and be
able to turn on/off different data sets.
Is this possible?

I don't think I could join multiple excels to the same shape layer ?
I remember reading something that gave me the idea maybe I save what I've
got now as a NEW shapefile - is that right?
Then I could start over with the original shapefile, join a different
excel, save that as new shapefile, then I could add the multiple shapefiles
as layers then I could turn them on/off

Is that possible? Is there an easier way?

btw, I'm using QGIS 3.4.4 on a Mac

Thanks for any help!
