One more test on the same machine with QGIS 0.8.1 this time, which does 
not have the neat-looking transparent vertex markers in digitizing mode:

not-digitising
FPWIFP on: 22.33
MLALJ on: 24.868
both off: 27.683

digitising
FPWIFP on: 32.324
MLALJ on: 49.036
both off: 31.248

Outside digitizing both results are comparable. In digitizing though it 
is ways faster in all modes. Please consider.
