[Qgis-user] edit attribute tables

I am a new user of both GRASS and QGIS. I am using GRASS version 6.3.0 and
QGIS version 0.11.0.

I would like to be able to edit vector layer attribute tables in QGIS but
have not been successful. I need to add a column then enter values in the
column.

If the vector was created from a shapefile with the 'Add a Vector Layer'
then I can open the attribute table and click start editing but the add a
new column button is disabled.

If the vector was created from a GRASS vector layer with the 'Add GRASS
vector layer' then I can use the 'Edit GRASS vector layer' tool and I can go
to the Table tab and add a new column to the table then I click on the Edit
attributes' button and nothing happens. The button is on and if I open the
attribute table the table is blank. So if I close the Edit GRASS vector
layer tool and then right click on the layer in the legend and click open
attribute table, I get the complete attribute table but the start and stop
editing and add and remove column buttons are disabled.

I saw some threads about editting GRASS vector layer attribute tables from
2005 in the archives and all indicated that you cannot edit the attribute
table for a GRASS vector layer. Is this still the case? Is it still not
possible to edit the attribute table for a GRASS vector layer?

Also, as indicated above, I am not successful in completing the type of edit
I want (add a column and fill with values) with either a vector layer
created from a shapefile or a GRASS vector layer. Please advise if I have
missed some simple step to edit attribute tables.
