actually for big vector layers the grass module works much more
efficiently for me. You have also more options (more algorithms,
including smoothing ones), if you need them.

You'll need to create a location and a mapset, then import your vector
in GRASS, then open the toolbox and use the generalize module.
The QGis manual is pretty clear on how begin with location and mapsets,
but if you need further assistance just drop a line.
