[Qgis-user] customize label placement via attributes

I want to be able to use a vector attribute for locating labels.  For
example, I have a point layer of city names

no,name,position
1,X city,left
2,Y city, right

or
no,name,position,x_offset,y_offset
1,X city,left,1,2
2,Y city, right,2,3


Imhof have this advise: names should be placed wholly on the land.  My
mapping area have this very complicated land-ocean interface.
Any advise?
