I've also been having issues on my 32 bit install (my 64 bit works fine)
from Ubuntugis repos, but a self compiled version works fine. I have not
been able to track down the issue but the last time I had something
similar it was a conflicting library somewhere in Qt. But that's really
just a guess to start.

Which binaries are you using?
