Hi Els,
in addtion of the answers others gave earlier.
there is a python plugin called 'MultiQml', with which you can tell QGIS
to use one qml/style file for several different layers. This works if
you have a lot of layers which use the exact same symbology: you can
style them in one go.
another option maybe? To start with a 'base'-project, save that to a
project file, and use that project as a starting project for other
projects in which you can then load additional data. After
loading/symbolisation you can save the project via 'Save As' to a
different name.
