[Qgis-user] Datatypes after join attributes

When I use Vector > Data Management Tools > Join attributes... to join a csv to 
a vector layer the datatype for the new field in the vector is always a string 
(the data is invariably numeric). I then use the field calculator to create a 
new field with the string data converted to real. This is a little tedious. Is 
there an easier way?
