[Qgis-user] getting values from a WMS layer

Is it possible to get values from a WMS layer e.g. load WMS raster layer from NASA or some other server then have your points overlayed and use the point sampling tool?  This would work if you have loaded your own raster layer but with WMS layers it does not seem to work is this only possible with certain types of WMS servers/layers?
