That fixed it.  

A little more detail for other users with this issue...

1. create a new raster layer with a *very small* mrsid file.
2. open properties of the layer
3. change the "Contrast Enhancement" to "no stretch"
4. click the save button to make this the default for all raster images
5. now you can create a raster layer with a very large file again.

it is a bug in 1.7, be sure that in the raster properties the "contrast enhancement" parameter is set and saved to "no stretch", then try again.
