Since using 1.8 'Master' under Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) I've been unable
to merge rasters (by going Raster -> Merge) at all. When I try I get
the "The process crashed some time after starting successfully"
message. The other raster tools that I've tested (Warp, &c.)  are
fine.

This hasn't worried me unduly because in development versions things
tend to come and go and it's usually just a question of waiting. I'm
not sure if this has any bearing on your problem.
