Sextante it's an implementation of SAGA GIS in Java in order to fit on
gvSIG development. SAGA GIS is the real thing and has a Python
interface.

SAGA GIS is in active development since his last release was one month
ago. The idea in both cases is to implement a framework for Geospatial
Analysis Development, not very far of what can be currently achieved
using libraries like Python Traits

tools.
