[Qgis-user] Introduction and question, how do I mark an area on a map showing location of a trench?

What you wan to do is possible in the map conposer (draw an arrow and 
add a text box). My advice would be to assign the number of your 
trenches as attribute of the layer and use the labeling system.

Reading the manual will be bring you up to speed in no time
