[Qgis-user] Delete a field via GUI

Dear all, 
is there a way to delete a field of a sqlite or shp file using the GUI of
QGIS (without any plugin) and without the need to make a copy of the
original layer? 

I'm using qgis for windows, and either with QGIS 1.8.0.2 or with 1.6.0 I
have delete column icon in the GUI, but it's always disabled.
