Yes, setting the projection to Google Mercator (EPSG:900913) is very
important (you can use the "Enable 'on the fly' CRS transformation" box
to reproject your data, assuming the projection for your data is set
correctly). This error looks like a QT problem, though. Do you have
qt-python installed?
