[Qgis-user] finding xy values for txt/dbf table

Hi List,

given a (txt/excel/dbf) table with data and two empty x,y columns in it

given that a user based on a record of that data can point on a map
where a record is located (either because there is some location
description in the record, OR because there is an old scanned map
available with numbers on it)

what would be the easiest way to fill the x,y columns?

a plugin or making a shape first and then make a txt/dbf from that?

other idea's?
