Mmm, myself I think would now load the table in postgis, add x, y and
point column and add points then (filling x and y via procedure or just
in the end).
(tried to do this with shapefiles and sqlite first: but both will not
prepare files without geometries...)

But both your and my solution are for more or less advanced users.

This use case are people who just want to open a table and a
gereferenced tiff and by selecting a record in the table and clicking in
the map the x and y is filled

Could make a plugin for it, but hoping there was another smarter
non-techie way.
