[Qgis-user] Table of abundances for categorical raster thematic maps (i.e. LC)

Is currently (1.7.1) any way to calculate the frequency table
(abundance as surface and/or nb. of pixels)
of a categorical raster layer in QGIS (without using grass)?
Converting into vector is an option, but
1. Vector/Basic statistics does not output a frequency table for
categorical variables
2. raster land cover maps use to result into very complex vector
layers and using vector/Export/Add Geometry Columns
often takes for ever.
