[Qgis-user] which elements to consider to improve Qgis Server performances?

I'm testing Qgis Server deeply in these days, with the aim to propose it as
the platform to publish a research project.
The project is quite heavy. We need to publish lot of layers, some local
and some picked from external WMS services, so the qgis_mapserv.fcgi is
under heavy load!

I'm running it under Apache mod_fcgid. Excluding load balancing, what are
the prior elements that could affect the overall performance? I mean, at
the level of Apache, of the fcgi module layer, and the qgis_mapserv
application itself? Are there good practices on this topic?
