[Qgis-user] Can't load SRTM30 DEM

Hello,

I downloaded a SRTM30 DEM tile from
http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/SRTM30/w100n40/ and I can not get it
to load in QGIS (v1.7.3, Win7 64-bit).  QGIS keeps saying that it's an
unsupported raster data source.

I've searched for many different things online, and I can't find what the
problem is.  Is there something special about the SRTM30 DEMs that prevent
them from loading?  Am I missing a plugin?

Any advice would be appreciated!
