I have tried myself with the same result. I also tried to log with
ODBC tracer (I had to set tracer logging on in registry and reboot,
settings in manager GUI were not sufficient) and nothing was logged
for GRASS. It seems that the problem is in compilation / linking of
ODBC driver in GRASS.

db.connect does not really do any connection to server, it just stores
default connection for current mapset.
