AFAICS there's a /usr/local/bin in the path,
do you have 2 different python versions installed?

It confirm that python executable is in /usr/local/bin and not in /usr/bin.

That setting should be auto-generated for MacOS (unless you changed
it before).
Please, can you remove that string at all, then restart QGis and then
report here what's the path the GdalTools settings dialog displays?

Are you sure? Does gdal_merge tool work?
