Do you really need that bunch of files in one project?
I am a cartographer, geologist and i work in minning too, and i deal with rasters (DEM's, LANDSAT IMAGES, EPIPOLAR, SCAN'S, ETC), vector (poligons, lines, points), DXF'S files and other, GPS files (*.gpx), wms services, databases, etc etc, and i have never load that many files in my projects.
