This is a value judgment on your part that is not necessarily shared by other users

I see the core issue as this: Should QGIS as a project force users to adjust their software usage to fit the tailored preferences of its developers, or should the developers adjust their development decisions to accommodate users? It's an age-old problem in the free software world and I don't pretend to have a right answer as to where that line should be drawn in this case. My own opinion is that it would be foolish to drop support for the default desktop environment on the most highly-visible and arguably most popular Linux platform.
