[Qgis-user] Issues with real time gps tracking and gps tools

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 beta
Qgis 1.9.90 alpha
usb Garmin etrex legend Hcx

I can get data from xgps via GPSD
if i disable sudo modprobe -r garmin_gps
I can get data from gpsbabble as root and garmin_gps

But i am unable to get real time tracking to work even if i star qgis as
root
or use gpsbabbel to work or the gpsbabbel plugin to work.
I have added a garmin rule to /etc/udev/rules.d the system can see the gps

I love qgis / grass and have migrated to a pure Linux system although i can
use mapinfo in wine but it really does not add anything useful to the
equation.

any help would be appreciated i have this issues with previous versions of
qgis and Ubuntu not the root issue.   

I am not lost I just cant find my car.
