[Qgis-user] Custom transparency options ➜ Transparency band

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to get a smooth transparency ramp with a
raster heatmap.
I've been messing around with value ranges in the Transparent Pixel List
and tried using the value picker but the results are not what I'm after —
the heatmap still has a hard edge rather than a nice ramp from 0 to 100%
transparency from max to min value.
I suspect that the answer (if there is one) lies in setting the
Transparency Band to use the values of the heatmap (Band 1 Gray, min 0, max
0.0195356) but it doesn't do anything.
Can someone who understands how this tab is supposed to work explain if I
can achieve what I want?
I'm not too fussed if the transparency ramp isn't interpolated like the
singleband pseudocolor styling, though that would be nice :)
Cheers,
