[Qgis-user] delete field doesn't work

In 1.7.4 I don't know, but in 1.8 it works like expected. In edit mode,
pressing "Delete Column" will give a list of all columns of the layer,
which one can select.

It happens with that specific shapefile, or any shapefile?
