[Qgis-user] Reasonable size for polygonize

I am classifying a raster and using SAGA | Shapes-Grid | Vectorising grid
classes. 
I did a trial run on a small area, 10 km by 10 km, with 30 m pixels. But
when I attempt 100 km x 100 km I get crash type behaviours and errors. The
larger dataset is getting toward a GB.

How large or complex a dataset can be attempted with this tool? 
Are there alternatives for large datasets?
