[Qgis-user] using QGIS with Java 7?

i've been using QGIS for a while now, but just now joined this mailing list.

i am now setting up on a freshly built Macbook Air running 10.9.5 and
the QGIS installer is insisting on Java 6; i have Oracle's Java 7 installed
and have no particular interest in adding the older SDK to this system.
is there any particular reason for the Java 6 requirement? if not, is there
any way to get QGIS to work with Java 7?
