There's some known issues with Yosemite - eg
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/11399

You should be right to upgrade your QGIS though, newer QGIS versions can
open older project files.

If you want to play it safe, use the LTS stable version 2.8.3 rather than
the latest 2.10.1 release.
