[Qgis-user] Install of 2.8

The windows standalone installers are self contained, but share preferences and registry settings.
So they don't usually give problems, unless an incompatibility in settings or plugins (openlayers, is a prime example) between versions.
I haven't seen anything to suggest that having 2.6 and 2.8 is problematic.
I will also point out that while 2.6 project files should work in 2.8, no attempt is made to make 2.8 project files work in 2.6.
