Hey Joseph,
SpatiaLite (spatial SQLite database) is an open-source counterpart to the file geodatabase. I use it in tandem with file geodatabases as well as the geopackage format. Esri also has started to support both formats, so it's easy to move data between them.
Have a look here:

Subject: [Qgis-user] File Geodatabases
Hello To All,I am still pretty new at using QGIS. I know I can open a file geodatabase inside of QGIS to extract data. My question is this: I currently use Esri File Geodatabases, but what would be the equivalent in QGIS? What are others using?
Thank you all in advance,
Joseph
