You can also create that polygon grid layer by using the Vector, Research Tools, Vector grid and basing the grid on the bounds of your single object.

Yes, there is.
You can define a layer with rectangles that cover your linear object (size and position acording to the scale you want) and create atlas using this rectangle layer
