Hi,
Simply because the express desktop will usually install most of what I need. As I also need special packages and libraries for programming in python, I usually add those after. I just got used to do it like and as I often do the install on multiple computers, I find it a little bit faster.

I presume this is documented somewhere and will try to sort through all that when I get time. This is a good example of why I am reluctant to wade into the upgrade end of the pool. Workload well out of proportion to the presumed benefits.

Select "qgis: QGIS Desktop" for 3x or "qgis: qgis-ltr-full." for 2.x. Or both. Other packages will be selected for you (like Saga, Grass.) Do not deselect them. You will also need to accept all licences during the install and you will probably be asked to add extra packages along the way. Accept them.

>>> For me, the normal procedure on a new computer is to start with an Express Desktop Install. Then, I do an "advance Install" to add extra packages or different versions of QGIS.
