[Qgis-user] view distortion

I am a new user with a problem I can' figure out.

I have a new map I'm working on that compresses the view in the north/south direction relative to the east/west direction. When I use the Measure Tool, the distances in both directions measure correctly, but the map doesn't look right. The compression is on the order of 50%.

What is my problem and how do I correct it?
