Thanks for testing. I'll also switch to Xorg and report back.

Over the past weeks I have been trying all kinds of situations: only
shapefiles (no GPKG), all GPKG layers in one database, a fresh project,
totally removing QGIS and deleting ~/.local/QGIS/. Nothing so far has
helped. I open a project, and after a short while the program starts to
freeze for several seconds. Even simple operations like removing a layer
from the Layers panel might cause freezing for 10 secs. Then many other
actions cause longer and longer freezes. Finally, when I save (another
freeze) and exit, my whole login session crashes.

Regards, Micha
