Hi Grant,

 

Mmmm, maybe use the map item extents and a data defined override (if the
layer has fields for the extent?). A few tips in the link below.

Also, is this a one off map or are you also contemplating an atlas from lots
of maps with different aspect ratios?

Is there a way I can snap a map window in a print layout to fit a layer
extent? For example I want the print layout window to fit the extent of a
map (e.g. published 1:100k series map) so that the coordinates go outside
the map frame without white space. Any thoughts?
