[Qgis-user] Editing a Layer Category

How do I add a new polygon feature to a categorized layer and assign its
pattern and attributes to be chosen from a categorical attribute field.
Every time I try to add a feature it classifies a new category. I don't know
how to "toggle edit" onto an existing category in the category list. Thank
you.
