For "hover" (get on screen the area of a region when
the cursor is above it):

Open the region layer's properties, go to "Display",
insert [%  $area  %] in the HTML Map Tip text area,
and click "OK".  Move the cursor over a region, and
its area should be displayed by your cursor.
