Richard, could it be that you only provide a name for the export? In the dialog it is intuitive to only type a name, but actually you need to browse to a directory first (using the little dots next to the input) and THEN add a name.
Without the path QGIS tries to save it in 'current dir' which is probably the directory in which QGIS is installed...

Note this is my experience with other users on Windooz, I'm not a mac owner/user
