Likely there’s a better way, but I’d use the Field Calculator.

1. The icon looks a bit like an abacus, and you can find it at the top of the map window and at the top of the attribute window.

2. To work only on your selected features, select the box

3. You want to update an existing field - from NULL to your value

4. Select the field that you want to work on.

5. Enter in here the value, ’string’, or expression you want in the selected fields.

This is a useful and powerful tool - but if you don’t make sure that it’s only working on the selected fields (2) it will work on all the entries in the field, and you’ll need to rollback.
