[Qgis-user] 16 bit greyscale heightmaps

Hello!
I'm just trying to pull very small 16 bit greyscale heightmaps to be used to build real landscapes in a wetlands video game I'm building.
I'm hoping I can work with someone who can just show me how to do it using the gui.  I have been trying to use https://apps.nationalmap.gov/ and osgeo.org and the QGIS app on my windows computer.  I think there's some other sites too.
I've been using AI to try to help me understand what to do and even to try and do it for me.  No love yet.
I have the exact location I want to pull and have done some neat conversions with QGIS and even created a few actual greyscale images... but I'm not doing something right.
Can someone work with me on this?  I'll credit you for your help in my video game.
