I think you were right Alex. 

<br><br>I found two GDAL installs, only one of which had MrSID and ECW

<br>capability. Only one was removable via Synaptic - the wrong one. I since

<br>tried to destroy everything GDAL on my machine to start again. I'll see

what happens.

But I've learnt a bit about Ubuntu in the process.

<br><br>I would look to make sure that you do not have more than one install of 

<br>GDAL. Are you using GDAL from Ubuntugis, source or another repo? 

<br><br>QGIS might be using a different GDAL install than the 1st one on your 

<br>path as shown by GDALformats.
