To add to what has been said: ArcGIS 10.1 desktop can now directly connect to Postgres through a toolbar and read the ST_GEOMETRY type  ... this *should* essentially provide QGIS's non-plugin Postgres functionality in ArcGIS.  No need to fuss with SDE or an Esri enterprise  "geodatabase" in general (Esri's spatial database layer), unless you want direct GUI functionality or other Esri features (like versioning, etc.).<div>
