For those who want to try things out, in a Unix shell type:<br><br>lsof -p 10371<br><br>where 10371 is the QGIS process id (so, adjust it).<br><br>Each time you open a file, enter the same command and you'll see how many files QGIS is opening. <br>

yes, it is a OS limit and remember also that when opening a shapefile<br>
you are opening at least 3 files...<br>
