 Agreed, it would be nice, and it would make branch usage more popular

 Michael, as an alternative for parallel development, the following seem a
 way:
 http://bazaar-vcs.org/BzrForeignBranches/Subversion
 It should make it possible for you to have your own local copy that you
 can commit to, unfortunately it will make it harder for other people to
 see your progress (as in, I guess you'd have to stand up a bazaar server
 for other people to hit)
