 (funny how I could look at that verbose debug output for 2 days, but
 pasting it here into Trac let me finally notice the one important line:

 {{{
 debug1: getpeername failed: Bad file descriptor
 }}}

 ...so specificing the IP address fixed it.  phew.  humbled again :)
