Maintenance Window *Start: Tuesday, Feb 17, 10:00 AM PSTEnd: Tuesday, Feb 17, 12:00 PM PST* This maintenance involves moving the default gateways for specific subnets from the Corvallis router to our new router at the State Data Center (SDC). Currently, traffic for many hosts physically residing in the SDC still routes back through our Corvallis datacenter. This creates a single point of failure, as the Corvallis facility is currently experiencing UPS reliability issues. By migrating these gateways to the SDC router, we eliminate this dependency on the Corvallis power infrastructure and significantly improve the stability and redundancy of our network. We are working as quickly as possible to complete these moves to safeguard your hosted services. *Impact* Gateways will be migrated one by one. You should expect a brief period of network unreachability (typically a few minutes) for each subnet as the cutover occurs. *Please note: This maintenance only covers the subnets listed below. Additional subnets will be moved at a later date which has yet to be scheduled.* Affected Subnets The following subnets and their associated IPv4/IPv6 ranges will be migrated during this window: General Servers 1: 140.211.166.0/25 | 2605:bc80:3010:101::/64 General Servers 2: 140.211.167.128/25 | 2605:bc80:3010:102::/64 General Servers 3: 140.211.15.0/24 | 2605:bc80:3010:103::/64 General Servers 4: 140.211.9.0/24 | 2605:bc80:3010:104::/64 OSL OpenStack 1: 140.211.167.0/27 | 2605:bc80:3010:501::/64 OSL OpenStack 2: 140.211.166.224/27 | 2605:bc80:3010:502::/64 OSL OpenStack 3: 140.211.169.128/26 | 2605:bc80:3010:503::/64 OSL OpenStack 4: 140.211.167.64/27 | 2605:bc80:3010:504::/64 OSL OpenStack 5: 140.211.169.0/26 | 2605:bc80:3010:505::/64 OSL OpenStack 6: 140.211.10.64/26 | 2605:bc80:3010:506::/64 OSL OpenStack 7: 140.211.11.0/24 | 2605:bc80:3010:507::/64 OSL Services: 140.211.166.128/28 | 2605:bc80:3010::/64 OSL Internal: 140.211.166.144/28 | 2605:bc80:3010:1::/64 OSL Protected: 140.211.167.120/29 | 2605:bc80:3010:2::/64 *IPv6 SLAAC Enabling* Along with the router migration, we will be enabling SLAAC (Stateless Address Autoconfiguration) on all of the subnets listed above. Hosts on these networks will automatically be assigned an IPv6 address. Please ensure your local firewall configurations (e.g., ip6tables, nftables) are updated if you wish to manage traffic for these auto-assigned addresses. OSUOSL said they will keep the same ips and everything so should just go offline when they move the server and back up once it?s in its new home and they have reset the network. So nothing should need to be done on our end unless something doesn?t come back up. Just be on standby to check after. We experienced a few issues during the migration which caused some outages but I believe all of them are resolved. We learned from those issues and hopefully the next set of subnet moves will have less outage time. As a reminder all of these networks now have IPv6 with SLAAC enabled. I'm working on properly setting up the OpenStack subnets this afternoon. The remaining subnets will move one week from today during the same time window (10am-12pm PST). I'll reach out directly to impacted projects to confirm they are aware of this outage. Please let me know if you have any questions! I'm planning to install Incus instead of LXD on it. For those who don't know Incus is a fork of LXD that is now managed by the original creator of LXD after he broke ties with Ubuntu. Let me know if anyone has questions about that. I'll need help incorporating this into our Ansible scripts so we can conditionally manage incus / lxd containers. I already experimented with incus/lxd that incus can copy over and run lxd containers without issue After it's up, will start moving osgeo7 and osgeo9 critical systems to it so that we can move osgeo7 and osgeo9 to the new data center without much downtime. As of this morning, we have finished routing all remaining subnets through the new data center. This gives us full control over our network configuration and eliminates the need for further coordination with LinkOregon regarding subnet subdivision. To date, we have successfully moved over 180 systems, with approximately 70 remaining. We anticipate completing the entire move by around March 11th. Please note that OSU plans to begin removing UPS units and racks in April. If you have co-located equipment and have not yet received a specific email from us, please contact me immediately. For those migrating from co-located equipment to our virtualization environment, all work must be completed by March 30th, at which point we will shut down the network at the old data center. This migration has required unplanned expenditures for additional networking hardware, power and network cabling, cable management, and temporary connections to LinkOregon. We have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover these costs. If you are able to contribute, please visit: https://www.beavsgive.org/organizations/open-source-lab Thank you for your continued support!
