[Shapelib] Unsupported Shapefile type of .sbn and like such

To all;
      My company is using Shapelib in a couple of tools and I have a
question about the unsupported file types like .sbn.  If .sbn file types
are present for a shape dataset does the generic shpopn calls read the
information from the sbn files as well as the .shp, .shx, and .dbf files?

And does if so what does it do with the data read?
